I've done the trick a lotta times and even picking numbers from 1-10, I never got half of what I added, so the trick failed. If I chose higher numbers, like 37, for example, doubling it makes it 74+8 makes it 82 / 2 makes it 41. Please help with this trick.

You can expand on this more, which is what I do. After they come up with four, tell them that A is 1, B is 2, C is 3, D is 4, E is 5, and so on. Tell them to think of a state that starts with that letter(Delaware is the only D state). Tell them to think of the second letter of the state, and think of an animal that starts with that letter. Tell them to keep thinking of the color. Keep thinking, keep thinking. Then say "Oh! There are gray elephants in Delaware"! It has a much greater effect than this.
