FLOATING DOLLAR BILL

THE EFFECT: A borrowed bill is folded into a small packet and placed on your open palm. Suddenly under your command it begins to move, but is doesn't just move it starts to rise from your hand! Amazingly it rises up, back down again and even floats from one hand to the other!

At all times you circle your hands around, under and over the note dispelling all thoughts of it is done. Finally you unfold the note and hand it back to the spectator in exactly the same condition it was received.

THE SECRET: The secret to one of my favourite easy magic tricks is Magician's Thread or otherwise known as Invisible Thread. This is basically just really thin thread, so thin it is almost invisible. You can pick this up in my magic store HERE.

In principle this effect is very similar to the Bottle Cap Levitation in that it utilizes Invisible Thread. Once you have your thread break off about an arms length and attach a piece of clear tape to both ends. Fold the tape onto it's self trapping the thread in the tape. See (pic1) below.

This helps you to find the thread as it is very hard to see. When you perform the trick you need to use an anchor to stick the thread to. Now this can be pretty much anything as long as it has some weight to it but can be easily picked up once you have finished floating the note.

In my example I use a pack of playing cards to attach one end of the thread to with more clear tape. You could use a wallet, glass, mobile phone etc. You need to place the other end of the thread into your mouth. Place it between your cheek and lower gum so you can still talk comfortably.

TIP: Alternatively you can use magicians wax attached to both ends of the invisible thread, this works well as an impromptu method - the wax can be stuck to almost anything on the fly. However do not place the other end into your mouth. (That would taste disgusting!) Instead attach it to the back of your ear.

When you are ready borrow a bill from a spectator, take the bill and fold it around the invisible thread and place it on your hand. To make the bill float simply mover your head back slightly. This will cause the thread to straighten making the bill appear to float.

Move your hands around the note to prove there is nothing supporting it. See (pic2). To make the note float from one hand to the other simply move your head slowly from side to side. All attention will be on the note so your slight movements will not be noticed. Remember only move your head slowly, no sudden moves this ruins the effect.

Easy magic tricks like this are so fun to perform. Especially if you throw your spectators off the scent by saying your are floating the bill with static electricity!

TIP: When something is seen to 'levitate' people automatically assume strings must be coming from the top of the object. The fact that the thread actually goes through the center means you can wave your hands above and below it which acts as a great convincer.

TIP: You do not have to float a bill you could use a piece of paper, receipt or napkin. A napkin would be more appropriate if you were at a restaurant for example.
