THE EFFECT:
Explaining to your audience you are going to perform a strange magic trick you buy or borrow a bottle of unopened drink and remove the bottle cap. You hand the bottle cap out for total examination. This proves to your spectators it is totally unprepared in any way.

Holding the bottle cap in your hands you give it a spin and amazingly it HOVERS in mid air in front of you. You can make it hover from one hand to the other and even rise up and down. Your spectators are baffled!

strange magic trick

It seems you have total control over the levitating bottle cap. To prove it is unsupported you wave your hands all around it. You make a ring shape with your fingers and amazingly the cap effortlessly floats through!

For the finale you get the cap to float through a solid silver ring totally dispelling any and all thoughts of how it might work! When you have finished the effect you simply hand the cap back to your spectators for total examination. WOW! an amazing effect.

Great strange magic effect
Perform surrounded and instantly
Cap can be examined before and after the trick

THE SECRET: So how do you perform this strange magic illusion? You are going to need a couple of secret items for this effect. Both are relatively inexpensive and will last you for literally hundreds of performances. You are going to need some Magicians Wax and Invisible Thread. You can get both items in my Magic Store.

Purchasing both these items will open up your magic arsenal immensely. You will be able to do so many more effects than just this one. For example the Spinning Card and Floating Bill to name just a few.

Take a 30cm (12 inch) length of invisible thread. This measurement is an approximate and you will need to find a length that works best for you. The thread needs to be long enough so it can reach from your mouth to your hand.

Take one end of the thread and attached a piece of clear tape to it. This ensures you can find the end as it is very hard to see! Take a small piece of magicians wax and roll it in a ball at the other end of the invisible thread. The thread should mix in with the wax. See (pic1) below.

strange magic

That is your gimmick made! When practicing this effect you can use a larger bit of magicians wax. But in performance you do not want it to be visible so only use a small piece.

THE METHOD: Strange magic like this is cool as it totally throws people! Before the trick you need to place the end of the invisible thread (with the tape) into your mouth. Place it at the side of your mouth in the gum line, between your teeth and cheek. That way you can still speak perfectly normally. Place the end with the magicians wax attached on your thumb nail. You are now set.

Just to recap the invisible thread should be running from your mouth down to your thumb nail of either hand you prefer. Magicians wax becomes softer as you roll it in your fingers - make sure you do this before the trick so it is nice and malleable.

Start the trick by borrowing or buying a bottle of drink with a bottle cap. Hand this out for examination and get a spectator to remove the cap and hand it back to you. This proves that it is totally unprepared.

TIP: Make sure your spectator removes the cap gently you do not want it really bent out of shape because it will not spin well!

Take the bottle cap from your spectator with the hand that does not have the invisible thread attached. As you do this secretly take the magicians wax off your thumb nail and press it firmly in the middle of the bottle cap. Make sure it is the dead center so the cap will spin evenly.

Hold the cap with both hands and give it a fast spin. Take your hands away and it will hover in the air! Make sure you position your body slightly bent over to give the cap enough room to spin away from you.

You can make the cap hover from left to right by moving your head left to right. Similarly by moving your head up or down the cap will hover up or down. Do this subtlety so it goes unnoticed, remember no sharp movements.

Move your hands around the cap at all times giving the impression it is totally unsupported. When you can see that cap is slowing down bring your hand up and catch it. You can then spin it again.

TIP: Always stop the cap in your hand before it stops spinning otherwise the cap just hangs in the air and does not look as impressive.

As the cap is hovering bring your pointer fingers and thumbs of both hands together into a ring shape. Bring them towards the cap up (the cap and string) and then down. Watch the video above again and you will see my fingers never go over the top of the bottle cap! This is a great convincer move to prove the cap is totally unsupported.

Another good convincer is to make the cap hover through a solid ring. How do you do that? Well the ring has a very small gap in it that when placed side on spectators can not see. This gaffed ring was taken from the linking rings trick.

This is quite an advanced move as it does take practice getting the invisible thread to pass through the gap. If you can pull it off though it looks great. Totally confusing anyone who thought you were using stings!

Once you have finished your levitation. simply scrape off the magicians wax from the bottle cap and hand it out for examination. You can drop the invisible thread and wax on the floor if you wish or place it into your pocked. Alternatively place the wax back on your thumb nail and you are ready to perform again! While your spectators are amazed say "I told you it would be a strange magic trick!"

TIP: For another bottle cap trick that would be great to perform after this one check out the Bottle Cap Matrix.

Finally how did I make the cap float down onto the bottle again? I have a confession to make. That was a camera trick! Yup sorry I apologise. Not usually one for camera trickery - I just could not resist. The footage is reversed. Although the move is not impossible it is very hard to pull off!

TIP: You do not have to use a bottle cap to perform this strange magic trick. You can use most small light weight items. Such as rings, coins, cards etc. Experiment and have fun with this cool strange magic trick.
